In 2019, SDC in partnership with WFP is implementing drought recovery program – VFA project which is part of intervention designed to enable households to meet basic food needs during this lean season, the project targets 13 villages of Roox, Dhextaal, Heema, margaaga, Beyra, Godad, Darusalam, Ceelgardi, Bursalah , Lacdhere, Rabable, Dhagxanya Cadde and Fardacune of Galckayo, Garowe & Bursalah districts
The project expected outcome is to create and produce assets required to cushion and save lives during the drought and other hardships including protecting livelihoods by strengthening and mainstreaming the traditional and local coping strategies in empowering households in the area to be food secure and their general well-being.
The implementation periods are 5 months, from February to June. The total numbers of households are 1617 households; all of them being above 18 years of age.
In addition, before the project started, SDC successfully mobilized and sensitized the communities and informed them on the criteria that was to be used in selecting the beneficiaries including the number of beneficiaries in each respective location.
OBJECTIVE
The primary objective of the selection & registration process was to make sure only the most vulnerable households in three Districts in Mudug and Nugaal regions benefit from the project. The data was used as a basis for identification of households and individuals that deserve to be beneficiaries of the project in order to be assisted.
main activities were accomplished as planned, firstly we successfully installed drip irrigation system on an area of 100 × 50m in each Rabable, Laac-dhere and Busalaha and planting of various vegetables and fruits namely lettuce, onions, watermelon, cucumber, hot pepper, and sweet pepper including tomatoes has begun.
In Lac-dhere, Rabable, Dhextal, Heema, Godad, Roox,Darusalam, Margaago, Bayra, Bursalah and Cel-gardi, we assisted the project’s beneficiaries to carry out project activities which included farm extension of an area of 141,100 M2, we also oversaw the excavation of water catchment area covering 1500M2 in Dhagaxyo-cade.
In addition, within the period, communities in Roox and Fardacune prepared an area of 250M2 for fodder production and on vocational skills training, the students under VFA who were trained in Burslaah finalized their last exams and are waiting for graduation ceremony, certificates and Start-up kits which are planned for the first week of July, In addition, 3 Wells have been prepared in the Heema, Margaago and Godad each is 15M deep, furthermore 13,000 tree seeds were planted in the villages of Fardacune, Lacdhere and Rabable.
