Transforming Lives: Documenting the Success of the Joint Resilience Project (JRP) in the Mudug Region.

The Joint Resilience Project (JRP) continues to make remarkable strides in improving livelihoods and fostering resilience in the Mudug region, particularly in the districts of Galdogob and Bursalah. Through a combination of innovative agricultural practices, strategic collaborations, and dedicated support, the project has become a beacon of hope for the local communities.

Empowering Farmers with Climate-Friendly Technologies

A major achievement under the Joint Resilience Project (JRP) has been the successful introduction of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and climate-smart technologies. These initiatives have transformed traditional farming methods and contributed significantly to enhancing food security in the region. One standout innovation is the installation of 50m x 50m drip irrigation systems across multiple farms and greenhouses. This technology ensures efficient water usage, supports improved crop yields, and enables year-round cultivation, paving the way for sustainable agricultural development.

Key Achievements of the JRP

  1. Handover of Farm Tractors
    • Two tractors and assorted accessories were handed over to cooperative farmers:
      • One in Bursalah.
      • One in Galdogob.
  2. Greenhouse Transplantation
    • Two greenhouses in Bursalah have been successfully transplanted with tomato seedlings.
    • Three additional greenhouses in Galdogob are in the process of transplantation, showcasing steady progress.
  3. Harvesting Activities
    • Harvesting is ongoing across all farms, with notable yields, so far these are the yields being recorded daily:
      • Bursalah Farms:
        • Himilo Cooperative Farm: Harvested over 300kg of tomatoes.
        • Rajo Cooperative Farm: Yielded 30 watermelons, 30 sweet melons, and 5kg of tomatoes.
        • Biyo Cado Cooperative Farm: Produced 100 watermelons, 10kg of hot peppers, and 5kg of sweet peppers.
      • Galdogob Farms:
        • Biyo Cado Cooperative Farm: Harvested 500 watermelons.
        • Isqambuus Cooperative Farm: Collected 10kg of okra and 10kg of sweet peppers.
      • Additional Harvests:
        • Xero Jaalle: Over 50 watermelons harvested.
        • Jannaalle (two farms): Over five sacks of onions harvested.
        • Dudun: 80 watermelons harvested.
  4. Business Development and Market Linkage Training
    • A series of training sessions on business development and market linkage are underway in Bursalah, equipping farmers with essential skills to enhance cooperative marketing systems. These sessions extending to Galdogob to further empower the farming communities.
  5. Greenhouse Activities
    • Threshing has been completed in two greenhouses in Bursalah, and three greenhouses in Galdogob have successfully undergone transplantation, highlighting the project’s focus on sustainable agricultural practices.

Collaborative Field Monitoring and Support

The World Food Programme (WFP) Area Office team, in collaboration with SDC, recently conducted a three-day field visit to key project sites, including Dudun, Tuulo Xanaan, Xero Jaalle, Bursalah, and Galdogob. These visits provided an opportunity to engage directly with beneficiaries, monitor progress, and evaluate outcomes against planned objectives. Such hands-on monitoring ensures the project’s continued effectiveness and identifies opportunities for further improvement.

Partnerships Driving Impact

The success of the JRP has been made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (MOAI), local governments in Galdogob and Bursalah, and the steadfast support of the World Food Programme (WFP). Together, these partners have paved the way for transformative change, fostering resilience, and promoting sustainable development across Somali communities.

Building a Resilient Future

Through initiatives like the JRP, communities in the Mudug region are not only improving their agricultural practices but also building stronger, self-reliant futures. With enhanced skills, climate-smart technologies, and strategic market linkages, farmers are better equipped to navigate challenges and seize opportunities for growth.

Special thanks to the WFP for its critical role in supporting Somali communities. By fostering resilience and enhancing sustainable development, WFP continues to make a lasting impact in building stronger, self-reliant communities.
