The Joint Resilience Program (JRP), a partnership between the Salaam Development Center (SDC), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the Puntland Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (MoAI), is celebrating remarkable agricultural success as farmers in Galdogob and Bursalax districts enter the harvesting season. Launched in July 2024, the initiative aimed to enhance food systems, improve livelihoods, and build resilience among local farmers. The project has exceeded expectations, transforming lives through sustainable farming practices.
Empowering Farmers Through Quality Inputs and Training
From the outset, the JRP distributed high-quality seeds, fertilizers, and agricultural nutrients to cooperative farmers, setting the stage for success. Over 35 farms, farmers received expert training in Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), focusing on soil health, pest control, crop rotation, and post-harvest management. This hands-on approach has empowered farmers to maximize their yields while adopting climate-smart techniques that ensure long-term sustainability.
A Bountiful Harvest Across All Cooperatives
Farmers across the region are enjoying a plentiful harvest of diverse crops, including:
- Beans: Approximately 1,200 kilograms harvested weekly.
- Watermelons: An estimated 1,800 pieces per week, meeting both local consumption and market demand.
- Okra Pods: Nearly 1,500 pods harvested daily, showcasing a steady yield.
- Tomatoes: Over 1,000 kilograms harvested weekly, contributing to improved nutrition and income for families.
These impressive yields highlight the project’s success in enhancing productive capacities and creating a resilient local food system.
Impact on Communities
The impact of the JRP extends beyond individual farms, benefiting the wider community by:
- Providing fresh, nutritious produce to local markets and households.
- Boosting farmers’ incomes through market linkages and cooperative aggregation centers.
- Strengthening food security and reducing reliance on external aid.
The program has also promoted inclusive participation, with significant contributions from women and youth in farming and decision-making processes.
Acknowledging Partners and Cooperation
This success story would not have been possible without the collaborative efforts of WFP, the MoAI, the SDC field staff, and the unwavering dedication of local farmers. The partnership has not only improved livelihoods but also strengthened communal ties, fostering a shared commitment to resilience and growth.
Looking Ahead
As the JRP continues to make strides, the focus remains on scaling these achievements. By building on the lessons learned and expanding access to quality inputs and training, the program aims to reach even more farmers, ensuring a brighter and more sustainable future for communities in Galdogob and Bursalax.
